FREE Octapod Residency Position
In 2009 Octapod is offering two FREE residency positions. One position has already been given to the Cultural STOMP Festival, and Octapod is currently seeking applications for the second position from individuals or small groups (3 people max) interested in using the Octapod space for arts and cultural activities.
The Loft Youth Venue School Holiday Program
The Loft Youth Venue has announced their School Holiday Program. Offering such events and workshops as: Aerosol Art Classes, Design for Ceramics, Radio Production & Podcastingf, Circus Skills, Breakdancintg 101, Self Defence and even a popcorn and pizza night, the Loft is sure to cater for any young people busting for something to do over the summer.
All activities are free for Youth Venue members. All registrations for workshops must be in at least 2 days prior to the workshop date so remember to book and secure your position.

Nations Youth Self-Portrait Prize
The National Portrait Gallery invites all young Australians between 18 and 25 to enter the National Youth Self-Portrait Prize 2009.
A selection of entries, including the prize-winning work, will be displayed at the National Portrait Gallery and as an online exhibition from 23 July–13 September 2009.

Kids Circus w/ Circus Avalon
Kids Circus
Sessions will normally involve running games, a warm up and then group balances. Then participants work with whatever equipment they like for the remainder of the sessions. The photograph shows some of the equipment available. Unicycling, juggling, hoops, diablo, devil sticks, cigar boxes, balancing chair, rings, etc., Stilts, aerial ring, tissue, rope, aerial ladder and trapeze are also available for suitable students. Clowning courses are run regularly, but as separate sessions.
Newcastle Region Art Gallery Kids Workshops
Located behind Civic Park and next to the Newcastle Region Library in Newcastle, New South Wales, the Newcastle Region Art Gallery hosts one of Australia’s most substantial public art collections outside of a capital city. In addition to the interesting and diverse standard collection, the gallery frequently hosts visiting exhibitions including Art Express, a showcase of a selection of the best HSC major artworks each year.

Rockin' the Black Dog
The musical talent of the Hunter will sing and play for charity on saturday, December 6, to raise awareness of depression and other mental illnesses.
Rockin the Black Dog, a free, all-ages music festival will include The Seabellies, The Boat People, Vaudeville, and the Newcastle Chamber Choir.
The event, at Camp Shortland, will honour the memory of Julie Firth, a volunteer high school mentor who lost her life on Mothers Day 2008, following her battle with depression.
University Cancellor Professor Trevor Waring said almost 800,000 Australian adults annually would experience a deprerssive illness.
Mayfield History on Show
An award winning historical visual arts and documented display about Mayfield's history, especially it's Aboriginal roots went on exhibition at John Hunter Hospital last week, Mayfield East Primary School's class 3/4P researched and compiled the display which won a National Trust competition for schools this year, in which primary schools were invited to make historical presentations.
Literary Award Winners Announced
Local poets have taken out the major awards in the 2008 Lake Macquarie Literary Award (formerly Roland Robinson Literary Award), with Kylie Rose winning first prize for her poem Bluebottles.
Bluebottles focuses on the relationship between mother and child while something much darker simmers under the surface. In 2006, Kylie received second prize in the Roland Robinson Literary Award for her poem Shark Egg. She is currently collaborating with poets and composers on a project commissioned by the Hunter Writers Centre.
The inaugural Roland Robinson Local Poet’s prize went to Martinsville poet, Magdalena Ball, for her poem Grandpa’s Birds.

2008 Archibald Prize: NSW Regional Tour
The Archibald Prize is Australia’s most extraordinary annual art event. First awarded in 1921, it has become one of this country’s most lucrative and prestigious awards drawing record-breaking interest and crowds to the exhibition of finalists. This year the prize was won by Sydney artist Del Kathryn Barton with a portrait of herself and her children. The regional tour brings the inevitably controversial, yet hugely popular and much anticipated exhibition to Lake Macquarie.

Renewal movement erupts in Newcastle
Former Newcastle arts personality Marcus Westbury has launched an ambitious plan to allow community groups to use vacant office space in the central business district.
What has started as a plan for a small public meeting has exploded in the past week following its posting on social networking site Facebook.
Mr Westbury said it was time to put together some real strategies to turn Newcastle's "rotting CBD" around.
"We want community groups, artists, business owners, and concerned citizens to join the campaign to activate the Newcastle CBD through low capital, community driven projects"
Australia's Independent Booksellers Announce Short List of Winners for the "Indie" Award.
Australia's independent booksellers have selected the four listed titles for their major new prize, The Indie Award. The $19 000 prize will honour an Australian author for the best book of the past 12 months, with the winner to be chosen by independent booksellers and announced on Monday 6th October 2008.
The four shortlisted titles for the inaugral Indie Award are:
Debut Fiction: Addition by Toni Jordan.
Fiction: Breath by Tim Winton
Non-Fiction: American Journeys by Don Watson
Children's Book: Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan
Support for Indigenous Culture
The Australian Govt has announced it's approval of almost $400 000 in grants for local Indigenous language, arts and cultural programs.
Local grants recipients are:
-$344 960 for the Awarbukarl Cultural Resource Association for IT resources and language materials for language workers.
-$32 394 for the Loft Venue to support arts and cultural training programs for Indigenous youth.
-$10 000 for the Muloobinda Aboriginal Corporation to deliver a cultural program for Indigenous men in the Port Stevens, Wollumbi and Lake Macquarie areas.
