What is your first memory of art?

As part of the 'People' section in the August 08 edition of CH News, we ask Cat Scobie "What is your first memory of art?".

To read Cat's response, go to culturehunter.org/news/cat-scobie.

To continue on with the theme, what is your first memory of art?

My first memory of art

My first memory of art is being about 6 years old and my mum had these hard cover books about the art of the Masters (Michaelangelo, etc). There was a whole series of them, and they were in a dark wooden cupboard in the darkest room of the house. It always felt really special to get the books out and have a look through them. But it also felt like art was something not accessible to me.

This is in complete contrast to where those books now live - in my mum's art room (she discovered her 'inner artist' at about 50 years old!). Her art room's a really bright room with lots of natural light, and the books are often sitting on the floor - totally accessible.

My 7 year old son now has his own art room (he wants to be an artist, like his mummama), and I hope his first memory of art is a really positive one!

Cheers

Tattoos and thick pencils

I've been racking my brain trying to work out what my first memory of art is, and the only thing that keeps popping in my mind is my parents' friends' tattoos. Many of my parents' friends had their arms and backs completely tattooed with various colourful pictures of anything and everything you can imagine. I wouldn't say I liked them at all, but I guess I was a little intrigued.

I also loved those thick coloured pencils in tins on the desks in kindergarten. My kindy classroom in my memory was always full of light and colour, with paintings up on the wall and lots and lots of fun. One of the happiest days of my life was at the end of term when the teacher let us all take home 5 or 6 coloured pencils each... they were my treasured possessions for years to come (in fact I think I still have one or two in a drawer at home!!)
