Newcastle The Movie

Have you seen, or are you going to see ‘Newcastle’ the movie, filmed right here in the Hunter?

What do you think? Does it give a true depiction of our lives here in the Hunter, or is it missing a few things? Are there too many stereotypes that take away from the ‘actual’ Hunter that we all know and love?

Newcaslte. Parents be Warned!

My husband & I took our 2 boys and a friend to see the movie Newcastle yesterday afternoon. We walked out around 20 mins later. The M classification (same as Spiderman) and hype about the spectacular showcasing of our great city falsely led me to believe this would be an appropriate movie for our surfing family. I was absolutely disgusted. I have since viewed the trailer and it does not portray the graphic crude content of the film. I quote a comment I heard this morning which sums it up well "An R-rated Home and Away". I have no problem with these movies, my issue is the classification and the misleading description of a 'coming of age teen surfing movie.' We feel like we have just accompanied the kids to their first porn flick!

An 'M' rating is described by the Australian Classification Board as "The content is moderate in impact" and "Recommended for mature audiences". How old are your boys? how 'mature'? If you have a complaint about a film's classification, contact the classification board a:http://www.classification.gov.au/special.html?n=251&p=62

Interestingly, we will take our children to movies that are ACTIVELY marketed at us as children's movies (Star Wars, Spiderman, Batman, Lord of the Rings)that are FILLED with killings, dismemberments, guns, weapons, fights, explosions, massacres and general disregard for life...and we don't bat an eyelid. Heck, we will even go out and get the matching computer game/t-shirt/figurine/DVD etc...

BUT a 'coming of age' flick showing awakening adolescent passion that does not have one gun, one knife or mindless destructive car chase and represents kids the way they REALLY talk and relate to each other is branded as "pornographic"!!!(I thought we had got over 'Blue Lagoon')

God help our kids when they have parents like us.

Good point kjs

In regards to portraying the 'true' Newcastle, I'm sure there's a lot more of this going on at our local beaches than superheros and dismemberments!

I don't think this movie was ever advertised as a film for children, though I could be wrong...
