School holiday activities 5 – 23 January 2009

Newcastle City Council offers a range of school holiday activities for kids of all ages, and there are plenty of the things to do in and around our beautiful city.

The Black Dog Institute seeks essays from people in the workplace who have clinical depression or bipolar disorder, and also from their family, friends, workmates, supervisors and managers to share their experiences.

The topic this year is: Mood Disorders in the Workplace.

Prize pool of $3500.

The Max Kelly Medal was established by the History Council of NSW to encourage students and other beginning historians in the writing of Australian history from original material. Prize includes $500.

Jan Owen, 2008 Newcastle Poetry Prize Judge, will be presenting a special workshop at the Hunter Writers Centre in November.

New Angles and Directions: poems and prose poems with Jan Owen

Local poets have taken out the major awards in the 2008 Lake Macquarie Literary Award (formerly Roland Robinson Literary Award), with Kylie Rose winning first prize for her poem Bluebottles.

Bluebottles focuses on the relationship between mother and child while something much darker simmers under the surface.  In 2006, Kylie received second prize in the Roland Robinson Literary Award for her poem Shark Egg.  She is currently collaborating with poets and composers on a project commissioned by the Hunter Writers Centre.

The inaugural Roland Robinson Local Poet’s prize went to Martinsville poet, Magdalena Ball, for her poem Grandpa’s Birds.

The Hunter Writers Centre was established in 1995 and incorporated in 1998 as a resource centre for writers in Newcastle and the Hunter Region. 

We support our membership via workshops, a regular newsletter, brokering mentorships and by providing a meeting space for writing groups. In addition the HWC administers a number of community and cultural development projects throughout the year and coordinates the annual Newcastle Poetry Prize.

Anne is a writer and director. She has written and directed the play “Lost Property” which will be presented at the Youth Venue on 16th. November. Anne will talk about her work at 11am.

Les has published around 30 volumes of poetry and is often called Australia’s bush-bard.

Calling all poets, hip-hop artists and other outspoken wordsmiths to polish their rhymes and lyrics for the State Library”s Australian Poetry Slam 08 competition with $10,000 in prizes on offer.

Newcastle Region Library will host the one of 11 heats planned across NSW, with two finalists from each heat battling it at the state final in Sydney in November. For details call 49 74 5300.
